Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has approved a monthly allowance of N200,000 for the principals of all secondary schools in Sokoto State. The initiative, aimed at improving the maintenance of school facilities, will commence in January 2025 and benefit schools across the state’s 23 local government areas.
The announcement was made on Monday during the Sokoto State 2025 Citizens Budget Discussion held at the Sultan Abubakar Maccido Institute of Quranic and General Studies.
Former Deputy Governor Chiso Abdullahi had appealed to the governor to allocate funds for school principals to address minor maintenance issues promptly. Abdullahi emphasized that the funds would enable principals to handle minor repairs, such as fixing infrastructure or procuring services from carpenters and masons, without the delays often associated with government approval processes.
Responding to the appeal, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Abubakar Bawa, confirmed the approval of the allowance, stating:
“In line with the appeal made by the former deputy governor, His Excellency has approved N200,000 monthly for each school principal. Payments will commence in January 2025 and will cover all secondary schools in the 23 local government areas.”
In addition to the education initiative, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has directed the State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Dadi Adare, to review and adjust the allowances of traditional rulers in the state. The directive came in response to a request by the District Head of Kilgori, Muhammad Jabbi Kilgori, who represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, during the budget discussion.
The review aims to ensure the allowances of traditional rulers are aligned with the prevailing economic realities, reflecting the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of key stakeholders in Sokoto State.
Governor Aliyu’s administration continues to prioritize impactful initiatives aimed at addressing the needs of both the education sector and traditional institutions in the state.
